  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Mom of Toddlers -- My mom read this to me as a child and I asked jesus to be my savior at 4 years old! : This is a great story with a picture on every page! It is an allegorical story following the character named Christian. Christian meets lots of people along his way to try to get rid of the burden on his back representing his sin. He cannot remove the burden on his own. Some people lead him astray and some people point him back to the right path towards Jesus and Salvation. Christian eventually reaches the cross and gives his life to Jesus. Jesus forgives his sins and the burden falls off his back into a bottomless pit and he is made new with a new identity in Christ! That is only the beginning of the story however and Christian goes on to learn what it means to live a life for God. He also eventually equips himself with the armor of God. It's a great story and one I recommend to every parent with young children! When my mother read this to me at 4 years old I gave my heart to Jesus. When Christian reached the cross I told my mom, "Mommy I want to give my burden to jesus too!" I pray this story will continue to share the gospel with many more people for years to come! • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Idahome -- ***THIS IS A "CHILDREN'S" VERSION!!*** : It should have been CLEARLY noted in the listing and description that this is NOT the original book. It is EDITED heavily by Rev. Jesse Lyman Hurlbut to "change the words here and there to simpler ones, and to OMIT ALL the conversations and arguments concerning subjects belonging to the field of doctrine." While a children's book would need simplifying, the listing is for the original ADULT book, so I'm really annoyed at this poorly listed item. The original is a true classic with SO MUCH for all of us to learn in regard to walking with God. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2014 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from FR94 -- Great Read!! : I recommend you purchase the Banner of Truth version. Came across a lot of versions of this book and many have changed the content to the point that the concepts have been done away with. I recommend either buying this version or the penguins classic version. I decided to go with Banner of Truth as they are more inclined to keep with the Puritan and historical Christian books and keep them as close as they possibly can to the author’s writing. Great book for reading during devotional time. Can’t wait for the digital movie being released on dvd in October 2019. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2019 )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Quirky Fellows -- Abridged: Why didn't you warn us? : I was disappointed when I read the opening words from the editor. It turns out that this edition is not the complete Pilgrim's Progress, but the editor took it upon himself or herself to remove anything resembling a sermon. Hey, Pilgrim's Progress is not exactly a children's book. It is a pastor's encouragement to his people. Those used to be sermons. There are children's editions out there, but I thought I was getting the real thing. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2015 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from CRgirl -- Get this book! : What a delightful way to introduce children to Bunyan's classic! I bought this on a recommendation from a friend and my 6 year old boy and 4 year old girl LOVE IT! We have actually read it several times because the children have begged me. This version is simpler, touching on most of the scenes but only dedicating one page or so to each scene/character that Christian meets. For every page there is a black and white sketched illustration which is appealing to children. My 6 and 4 year olds have remembered and referred to the characters and lessons learned in this book time and time again, which is impressive. All that said, I read a TON to my kids; if your children aren't used to reading much then I would hold off until they have a better attention span and vocabulary. But if your kids LOVE reading and learning, this book is one of the best you can get your children, ESPECIALLY if you're a fan of the full Pilgrim's Progress. • from B. Chandler -- HALL OF FAMEVINE VOICE : A 1678 Christian allegory was written by a violator of the Conventicle Act of 1664. ( 1.0 out of 5 stars )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Wendy L. -- Greatly distorted version of the original : I had read this magnificent classic at least three times but decided to purchase this version to be able to listen while driving my car. What a disappointment! If remaining faithful to the original is important to you, do not purchase this product. It both adds distortions (pilgrim's wife and children cannot see his burden. Really?) and subtracts spiritual insights The straight and narrow path of fidelity, so precious to the author, is left far behind. I had the fortitude to listen only through the passage where Christian passes through the "narrow gate" (called the wicker gate by the CD's) when I could abide listening no more. Approach this version with great caution. The good news is that I will now be able purchase a faithful unabridged edition instead. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2014 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ashtree -- This is the version to get! : I almost bought another audiobook version of this book, but thankfully a customer review alerted me to the fact that it was very Americanised - a syrupy-sentimental reading with billowing and intrusive background music. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from John B -- Everyone should read this book at least once in their life : Exquisitely crafted allegory of life, beautifully written, a truly inspirational and instructive book. An epic journey of the mind through the land of free will. If ever you have asked yourself the question "What the hell am I doing here and why?" John Bunyan shows you how to answer your own question. What is so unique about this piece of writing is that you know the characters, and all the locations, intimately, before you start to read it. We all do. I cannot think of another book that achieves this and makes such good use of it. Twelve and a half years of his life in gaol for preaching without a licence. Read his story and find out why the powers were so terrified of him. I promise you, you will never feel alone again. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 4, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from P. Boyd -- wonderful audio book highly recommend : I love this audio book, it is read to you so clearly and as you get into it the characters come to life weather in humour or the seriousness of danger Christian the main character finds himself in. It is read to you in old English but cleverly done so that you understand and take in the story ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 16, 2017 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from 1001obsessive -- Relevant even today : This simple narrative is a moving story of a journey from darkness and struggle into the light. Told in two parts, this book has relevance to anyone who enjoys the idea of triumph over adversity as Christian and then Christiana find their way through temptation, apathy and despair to Paradise. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 20, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Alan Crook -- Intoxicating : Sadly many think of this as a children's book. It is far from that because it envelopes all walks of life and all characters. The simple Gospel message pervades each sentence and builds and guides as the reader progresses through the book. I do a lot of reading built this is the only book that I continually return to.
